Collections > Ptolemaic period

The rulers of the Ptolemies of Egypt and the Romans were contemporaries with the Meroitic Period. In the third century BC, they maintained friendly relations.

From the end of the 3rd century to the middle of the 2nd century BC, the Ptolemies occupied a part of Nubia that they called Dodekaschoinos, which was in the Northern part of Lower Nubia (from Aswan to Maharaqa). In this area they built many important temples such as Philae, Kalabsha, Dakka, etc.

In 30 BC, the Ptolemies were replaced by the Romans.
